Harrisburg - John Harris & Simon Cameron Mansion
The mansion was home to John Harris Sr., William Penn's ambassador to the native Americans, and to his son, John Harris, Jr., the founder of Harrisburg. Harris doubled the size of his father's limestone house around 1766, and laid out the town of Harrisburg in one of its front rooms.
In 1863 it became the home of Simon Cameron, the first Secretary of War under President Abraham Lincoln. Cameron entertained many famous people in the Front Street Mansion, and eventually, his heirs left the home to the Historical Society of Dauphin County.
The home features a nineteenth-century drawing room, 14-foot high ceilings, chandeliers and peer mirrors.
