Harlech Castle

In 1647 the conquest of Harlech Castle, which had remained true to the Royalists, marked the end of the Civil War. The fortress was designed in 1283-9 by James of St George and is almost a perfect rectangle. Its most striking feature is its three-story, twin-towered gatehouse, the effect of which is completed by four circular corner towers. From here there is a superb view across Tremadog Bay, to the peaks of Snowdownia and the Lleyn Peninsula.
Harlech Castle was a high point in medieval castle building and is a World Heritage Site.
