Capital of the Land of Hamburg
Situation and characteristics
The Free Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Germany's largest city after Berlin, is one of the sixteen Länder of the Federal Republic. Its favorable situation at the head of the long funnel-shaped estuary of the Elbe has made it one of the leading
ports and commercial cities of Europe and a link between the sea and Germany's network of inland waterways.
The Land of Hamburg also includes the islands of Neuwerk and Scharhörn, far to the northwest at the mouth of the Elbe estuary.
