Citadel Road Description
Easily reached by car from the city center along Citadel Road, the Citadel has excellent views of the city, the harbor, Dartmouth, little George Island and the Angus McDonald suspension bridge.

Three citadels stood here before the foundation stone for the present star-shaped construction was laid in 1828 on the order of the Duke of Wellington. The entrance is by a bridge over a wide, dry moat. Infantry and artillery drills are re-enacted in summer on the parade ground in the center. Visitors can walk along the top of the earthworks and see the cannons that were the citadel's main means of defense.
