Güstrow - Schloss

In Franz-Parr-Platz, in the south of Güstrow, stands the Schloss (begun under the direction of Franz Parr in 1558-66; north wing by P. Brandin, 1587-89; east wing completed 1598), the finest Renaissance building in Northern Germany, with an elegantly articulated main front and a richly decorated interior (stucco ceiling ornament, ceiling paintings). Since its complete restoration in 1964-72 the Schloss has been the cultural center of Güstrow, with the Schlossmuseum (painting, sculpture and applied art by 16th century German, Italian and Dutch masters; collection of antique vases), the Municipal and District Library, a concert hall and Renaissance gardens.
