Fort Morgan has had a long military history, although it is best known for its role in the Battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War. The fort was completed in 1834 and became the biggest military base in Alabama during World War I when it was used for training heavy artillery crews to serve in France. After World War I Fort Morgan was deactivated and eventually turned over to the State of Alabama.
