Gubbio - Consuls Palace

(Local Name: Palazzo dei Consoli) The central feature of Gubbio is the Piazza della Signora, laid out on the slope of the hill on massive supporting pillars. It is dominated by the Palazzo dei Consoli (1332-37), one of the most beautiful Gothic palaces in Umbria; it was built by Gattapone of Gubbio, as was the Palazzo Pretorio opposite (commenced in 1349, but never completed). The Palazzo dei Consoli houses the Municipal Picture Gallery and also the Archeological Museum. The latter contains the "Iguvine Tablets" - seven out of an original nine bronze tablets (second century B.C.) with inscriptions partly in Umbrian, Etruscan and Latin, providing information on the political, social and religious life in Umbria.
