Pointe-Noire is a typical town of the northeast coast of Basse-Terre, with white and blue painted wooden buildings, fishing boats along the shore, and a nearby beach; all set in an area of black volcanic rock and mountain shadows.
At Anse de la Barque visitors will find a picturesque bay surrounded by coconut palms. Hikers can follow the Trace de Crétes from here, and sightseers can visit the quaint seaside hamlet of Marigot.
The village of Pointe-Noire is known for its woodworking industry. To learn about the industry stop in at The Maison du Bois, a small museum of woodworking history, with labeled examples of the trees used, and a furniture shop.
Visitors can pitch a tent to spend a night in the camping grounds at Traversée Anse de la Grande Plaine. Birdwatchers will enjoy the hummingbirds that congregate in the surrounding flower fields.
