La Desirade Island Attractions
Named Désirada by Christopher Columbus, it is an elongated desert-like island featuring hiking paths, coconut trees and coral-protected beaches along the southern coast. The island has few tourist developments, so the visitor will see a largely unspoiled example of the old rural French West Indies.
Baie-Mahault, Guadeloupe
The visitor will see a lighthouse and weather station on the Pointe Double. Of historical interest is the former leprosarium, which was operated by the Soeurs de la Charité and closed in 1954. Leprosy or Hansen's disease is a bacteria-caused wasting ailment under which sufferers were isolated since ancient times.

Grande-Anse - Grande Montagne
Hikers and sightseers can follow a moderately inclined path for 1.5 hours east to Grande Montagne, the highest point on the island (273m/896ft).
Grande-Anse on La Desirade, Guadeloupe
The capital town of the island, Grande-Anse on La Désirade and all the other villages sit on the 10km of the island's only road, which runs under a steep limestone cliff face. Visitors will enjoy its large golden sand beach, which is protected by a barrier reef.
Valley of the Rivière
Hikers and naturalists will enjoy Valley of the Rivière for its abundant wildlife such as iguanas and agoutis (goldhares) and the beautiful scenery.
