Zapopan

8km/5mi north-west of the city centre lies Zapopan, an old Indian settlement, now also a suburb of Guadalajara. It is widely famed for its 17th c. Baroque Franciscan church dedicated to the city's patroness, the Virgin of Zapopan. During the summer the statue is set up in various churches in the city in turn, and on October 4th it is brought back to Zapopan in an impressive procession of dancers, charros and mariachi orchestras. In the museum adjoining the church art and craftwork by Huichol Indians from the Jalisco and Nayarit mountains is exhibited and sold.

50km/30mi south-east of Guadalajara lies Laguna de Chapala, or Chapala Lake, with a number of picturesque little places around its shores which are popular with summer holidaymakers.
