Monte Argentario
The promontory of Monte Argentario rises out of the Tyrrhenian Sea on the coast of Tuscany, 35km/22 mi south of Grosseto.
Topography
In prehistoric times the Argentario Promontory was an island. Then a process of silting-up led to the formation of a tongue of land, 4km/2.5 mi long and 500-600m/550-650yd wide, on which the town of Orbetello now stands; and later still two other sandbanks were formed (the Tómbolo di Feniglia to the south, the Tómbolo di Giannella to the north), creating the Laguna di Orbetello.

Port'Ercole, Italy
(Near Grosseto)
The fishing port of Port'Ércole, on a site inhabited since ancient times, is the principal resort on the east coast of Monte Argentario. It is attractively situated in a small bay which is bounded on the south by a spur of hill crowned by an ancient castle. The old part of the town has preserved much of its former character. The painter Michelángelo da Caravaggio died of malaria in Port'Ércole in 1610; his tomb is in the parish church. To the north of the town is the new yacht marina of Cala Galera. There are boat services from Port'Ércole to the island of Giannutri.
Porto Santo Stefano, Italy
(Near Grosseto)
This little fishing village and ferry port (services to some of the islands in the Arcipélago Toscano) is beautifully situated in a valley running down to the sea. It suffered heavy damage during the Second World War. From the 17th century rocca (castle) above the town there are beautiful views of the town and the bay. From Porto Santo Stéfano there is an attractive drive round the west coast of Monte Argentario.
