Groningen Peat Cutting
Peat cutting began in the 16th century and led to the establishment of the characteristic veen or peat-bog settlements. In the eastern part of the province, where peat cutting was for centuries the most important element in the economy, there are many place names ending in -veen, -kanaal, - wijk (district in a town) and -mond (river mouth).
