Greiz - Upper Castle Oberes Schloss

Greiz is dominated by the Schlossberg (Castle Hill) and the Oberes Schloss which crowns it. Originally medieval, the castle was rebuilt in 1540 after a fire and extended in the 18th century. It consists of a number of irregular ranges of buildings on an almost elliptical plan, with numerous ornamental gables on the east wing. There are some remains of Renaissance interior decoration and some rooms in Baroque and Roccoco style. The Schloss is now an outstation of the Weimar State Archives.
