Greiz - Summer Palace

(Local Name: Sommerpalais) In the park in Greiz, originally laid out around 1650 as a small Baroque pleasure garden and converted about 1800 into a landscaped park in the English style, stands the Summer Palace (1779-89), a three-story building in early neo-classical style. The palace now houses the "Satiricum" (caricatures and satirical drawings from Hogarth to Daumier and the present day) and collections of books and prints (English mezzotints, prints and woodcuts). The library, originally belonging to the Princes of Reuss, contains some 24,000 volumes, mainly works of the French Enlightenment and the Goethe period.
