Methoni Attractions
Methóni is a small village in a sandy bay 12km/7.5mi south of Pylos, dominated by a large Venetian fortress.
Methóni was held for a brief period after the fourth Crusade by the Villehardouins, who ceded it to Venice in 1206. The Venetians developed it, under the name of Modon, into a powerful stronghold and naval station on the route between the Adriatic and Crete. In 1500 it was captured by the Turks, but in 1686 it was retaken by Morosini and held by Venice until 1715. During the war of Greek liberation (1825-28) there was violent fighting here between Ibrahim Pasha and a Greek force led by Admiral Miaoulis, supported by a French contingent.
