The Kyllíni peninsula - not to be confused with the hill of the same name in the northern Peloponnese - is the most westerly point in the Peloponnese. It ends in a ridge of hills which rises commandingly out of the wide coastal plain and is crowned by Khlemoutsí Castle. To the north of the hills is the little port of Kyllíni (known in the Middle Ages as Glaréntsa); in the middle is the village of Kástro; and to the south is the spa of Loutrá Kyllínis, with long sandy beaches which have made it a popular holiday center.
The area of alluvial land, partly flat and partly rolling, between the Kyllíni peninsula and Mt Erymanthos was known in antiquity as Elis.
