Komotini (Komotene) Attractions

Komotiní lies on the Kavála-Alexandroúpolis road and the Salonica-Alexandroúpolis railroad line. Komotiní, chief town of Thrace, is an agricultural market center (tobacco, grain, livestock). It has a population of Greeks, Turks and a few Bulgarian-speaking Muslim Pomaks.
Komotiní is built in a lush area.

Apart from the Archeological Museum, Komotiní also boasts a Folk Art Museum and the Byzantine Church of the Virgin, which has a carved iconostasis.
Komotiní (Komotene) Archeological Museum
The Komotiní Archeological Museum (Odós N. Zoidou), opened in 1976, displays in topographical order finds from all over Thrace from the fourth millennium B.C. onwards. Particularly notable items are a Klazomenian sarcophagus from Abdera (found in 1975), sculpture of the sixth-fourth centuries B.C. (including a small marble lion), gold jewellery from Orestis, bronzes from Didymotikho and a golden head of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, also from Didymotikho.

Located south of Komotiní is the village of Maroneia. The town and surrounding areas are very scenic with hills, mountains, and valleys making up the landscape.

Ancient Maroneia still reveals the old city walls, a sanctuary, and other remains.

Also of interest in the area is the Strymi Cave.

Women's Day Festival
During Women's Day on January 8, the women of Komotiní have a good time in the coffee-houses and tavernas, which they normally never go to; the men get back to their usual haunts only in the evening.
