Karyes - Nea Moni Attractions
From the town of Chios a road runs northwest by way of the colorful village of Karyés (5km/3mi) and over a pass to the convent of Néa Moní, a straggling complex of buildings in a verdant setting now occupied only by a few nuns. The convent, founded by the Emperor Constantine IX Monomachos (1042-55), is notable for its magnificent mosaics on a gold ground, which rank with those at Dafní and Oàsios Loukás as the finest surviving examples of 11th century religious art.
