Kardítsa, founded during the Turkish period, is an agricultural market town in the Thessalian plain, below the east side of the Pindos range.

Kardítsa is the capital of the prefecture of the same name. It is built on the banks of a tributary of the Pinios. With its three main squares and lovely Pafsilipo Park, this new town is a model of town-planning. It has three museums - The Christian Museum devoted to religious art, and two interesting folk art museums.
The Karaiskakia festival is held annually at the end of May.
