Kalavrita Attractions Kalávryta

Kalávryta, situated at the foot of Mt Erymanthos in the northern Peloponnese, is a good base for hill walking and climbing. The town was destroyed and more than 1,400 people were murdered by German troops in 1943 in reprisal for partisan activities in the area. There is a memorial on the hill above the town.

The ride from Diákofto to Kalávryta is breathtaking as the tiny train climbs slowly up the Vouraikos Gorge, with foaming waters coursing through the narrow ravine.

About one hour east of the town, on a rocky height, stand the ruins of a medieval castle "Kastro tis Orias". From Kalávryta you can also visit the historic monasteries of Ayía Lavrá and Méga Spiléon.
Megaspílaion
Seven km/4.5mi northeast from Kalávryta, on the road to Diákofto, is the monastery of Megaspílaion (the Great Cave). The church has a wax icon of the Mother of God, and there is a small museum (icons). The monastery can also be reached on an old rack railroad, which runs up through the magnificent scenery of the wild Vyraikos gorge.

Seven km/4.5 mi southwest of Kalávryta is the Ayía Lávra, a monastery founded in 961, where the Greek fight for independence from the Turks was proclaimed in 1821. There is a small museum.
Kalávryta - Museum of the Sacrifice of the People of Kalávryta
Housed in the old primary school building, the Museum of the Sacrifice of the People of Kalávryta describes the events of 1943 when German forces executed local residents. The goal of the museum is to promote world peace and cooperation.

Limnes Kastrion Cave
There is a cave at Limnes Kastrion from Kastria village and 18km from Kalaáryta. The cave is 2,000 m in length and contains the mouth of a subterranean river. An artificial entrance has been open and a kiosk has been built.
