Flórina lies on a plateau to the north of the Verna hills, 16km/10mi from the frontier crossing into Yugoslavia (Bitola). Situated in a well cultivated farming region, it has a college of agriculture and a well known fruit market. There is a trunk road from here via Édessa and Pélla to Salonica (160km/100mi).
The Flórina Archeological Museum is located at the railroad station square. The collection includes topographical and architectural plans, photographs and a model of the Petres site, as well as sculptures, reliefs, and prehistoric vases.
Also housed in the museum is the Byzantine Museum of Florina.

The Florina Museum of Modern Art features paintings and sculptures by a variety of artists. Also on offer at the museum is an art workshop center which is designed to encourage local artists.
