The Attic Riviera is the stretch of coast between Athens and Cape Soúnion, also known as the Coast of Apollo. In antiquity there were a number of towns in this area, including the sites of Áyios Kósmas and Anaphlystos, near Anávyssos, which have yielded important finds, but in modern times the area was sparsely populated until the influx of refugees from Asia Minor after 1922 (the theme of Ilías Venésis's novel "Galini"). The south coast of Attica has been transformed by the development of mass tourism since World War II, and a whole series of popular resorts have sprung up (Palaion Faliron, Kalamaki, Glyfada, Kavouri, Vouliagmeni, Varkitsa, Lagonisi, Anávyssos, Legrena, etc.).
The Apollo Coast runs the 70 km of coastline between Piraeus and Lavria, on the western coast of the Saronic Gulf.
