Description
Spanning the provinces of Granma and Santiago de Cuba is the Gran Parque Sierra Maestra, home to Cuba's highest peaks, including Pico Turquino at 1974m / 6,390ft. This mountainous area is famous for being the hideout and headquarters for Fidel Castro and Che Guevara during the revolution. The Gran Parque Sierra Maestra is remote and rugged, and some areas are only accessible on foot. There are some great hiking opportunities in the mountains and guides are available. There is a popular three day hike which requires a guide and is moderately strenuous. There are camp sites along the way or rustic shelters.
