Upper Sure Natural Park Parc Naturel de la Haute Sure

The Upper Sure Natural Park consists of plateaus, narrow valleys with wooded slopes and the lake of the Upper Sure dam, built in the 1960s to meet the country's drinking water requirements. The natural park is a great place for leisure activities and aquatic sports. It is also an ideal place to learn about the regional ecosystem. Wildlife and eco-tourism are important in this region and tours are devoted to these themes. The area also possesses a rich architectural heritage.The fair and festival in the natural park are held on the first weekend in July.A route linking the stone sculptures out in the countryside was produced in the summer of 1995. The Park Center building, in the former cloth factory in Esch-sur-Sure, contains the reception and information center about activities in the area. Typical products of the region can be purchased here.In a landscape typical of the Ardennes, the following communes form the Upper Sure Natural Park: Boulaide, Esch-sur-Sure, Heiderscheid, Lake of the Upper Sure, Neunhausen, Rambrouch, Wahl and Winseler.

Rambrouch Commune, Luxembourg
The commune of Rambrouch is made up of a number of small villages, the total population amounting to 2,620. It is the most populated commune in the Upper Sure Natural Park. It also has the highest altitude of the communes. Rambrouch has a landscape of agricultural plateaus and winding valleys etched into the Ardennes slate.The hills surrounding the villages of Arsdorf and Bilsdorf offer pleasant footpaths through extensive viewpoints over the lake. At Arsdorf there is a well restored old mill, and in Bilsdorf there is a ceramics workshop.Bigonville is in an excellent location on the agricultural plain surrounded by wooded slopes. St Donat's chapel is in a picturesque setting and there are extensive networks of walking paths and viewpoints.Near Eschette, the forest hides the ruins of the castle of Schorels.The parish church at Hostert has an outstanding main altar.Perlé and Holtz are situated on the hilltops at the border between Luxembourg and Belgium. The extensive forests are crossed by many footpaths and the church at Perlé has Russian stained glass windows.Martelange-Rombach is located on the banks of the Sure. Haut-Martelange is the site of the former slate quarries that were worked between 1750 and 1986. Here visitors can see the ruins, architecture and the Slate Museum and have a guided tour of the site.Rambrouch, Schwiedelbrouch and Koetschette are situated on a plateau with pleasant landscape.At Wolwelange there is a former hermitage.
Commune of the Lake of the Upper Sure, Luxembourg
The typical Ardennes villages of Bavigne, Harlange, Kaundorf, Mecher, Nothum and Tarchamps-Watrange make up the commune of the Lake of the Upper Sure.At Bavigne the town hall, parish church (altar dating from 1741 and stations of the Cross) and holiday apartments are worth noting.In Harlange there is a holiday center for young people, a unique environment covering 30 hectares and scattered with footpaths. There are varied walking paths leading to Tarchamps-Watrange as well as cross-country ski trails.At Kaundorf there are water sports facilities, a pilgrimage to St Pirmin chapel and spring (on Whitsun Monday), a rebuilt was bunker, mountain bike rentals, guided walks in summer, nature trails and footpaths over the lake with fine views.Liefrange, nearby, is located right near the lake. The lively activities of the water sports center combine with the peace and quiet of the wooded slopes are attractive to visitors. There is an extensive network of footpaths in the village.
Commune of Boulaide
Boulaide, Baschleiden and Surré (total pop. 600) are surrounded by many walks, along which are benches for resting. Viewpoints include: Hochfels, Tempelskamp, Bourglay, Pont de Misère, Moulin de Boulaide. Upstream from the village, the Sure still takes its original course, while downstream it forms an artificial lake ideal for water sports of all kinds. There is a beach at Rommwiss. In Boulaide, fishponds are open from March to December and there are folk festivities and a flea market on the third weekend in July. At Baschleiden there is a themed walk "meadow, stream and forest."
Commune of Esch-sur-Sure, Luxembourg
Esch-sur-Sure is a small village set in the mountains and skirted by the river Sure. It is one of the most outstanding sites in the country. The village is dominated by its ruined manor house (927; open year round, free admission) and by the cliffs looking down to the river. The road takes you via two old tunnels to the Sure dam.Esch-sur-Sure offers 90km of walking paths. The Maison du Parc (natural park reception and information center) is housed in the old cloth factory and has a permanent exhibition on the park. Typical products of the region can be purchased here. There is a cloth-making museum with demonstrations.
Neunhausen Commune, Luxembourg
The commune of Neunhausen is made up of the villages of Insenborn, Lultzhausen and Neunhausen. The first two villages are located on the slopes of the hills on the right bank of the Lake of the Upper Sure with 25km of picturesque walking trails. In the region visitors can try a number of water sports and walk along the illuminated promenade. There are landing stages on the lake as well. The area also has a Second World War museum and a forest center with a nature trail (Burfelt).
Commune of Heiderscheid, Luxembourg
The commune of Heiderscheid is composed of the villages of Dirbach, Eschdorf, Heiderscheid, Heiderscheidergrund, Ringel and Tadler.There is a local history museum in Heiderscheid. A park in Eschdorf there is a park with local plants, a playground, barbecue and pond.Heiderscheidergrund has an octagonal church. The whole area has some well laid out and marked walking paths.
