Granada - Sacromonte

From the Carrera del Darro the Cuesta del Chapiz branches off on the left. At the Casa del Chapiz, a fine example of a house belonging to a well-to-do Morisco family of the 16th century, the Camino del Sacromonte turns off on the right and ascends the hill (fine views), passing large numbers of cave dwellings occupied by gipsies (gitanos), whose presence in Granada is attested since 1532, to the former Benedictine abbey of Sacromonte (12th century), which is much favored by the gipsies. Other footpaths, steep in places, climb through deeply indented gullies (loose stones) to the Ermita San Miguel de Alto, from which there are magnificent views.
