A short drive in the immediate surroundings of Gramado will prove very rewarding. 6km/4mi outside the town take the Linha Bonita, a road which winds its way down through the hills to a little village with typical local cottages, a watermill and a small church. The private museum of the Fioreze family contains 700 copper and iron utensils and implements used by the Italian immigrants.

Beyond this is the Cascata do Panelão, a 15m/50ft high waterfall which plunges down into a basin 10m/35ft across and disappears into clefts in the rock, emerging lower down from the caves which the water has carved out of the basalt rock.
The return journey is on the Linha Furna, which, 20km/12.4mi before Gramado, crosses the Rio Santa Cruz on an iron bridge.
