Ohrdruf
15km/9mi south of Gotha is Ohrdruf, where St Boniface, the "Apostle of the Germans", began his mission in Thuringia with the foundation of a monastery. Schloss Ehrenstein (1550-90) is a Renaissance palace (restored 1976 onwards) with a richly decorated doorway and a massive tower, once the residence of the Counts von Gleichen. Here can be found a Heimatmuseum (palls, Gotha caps) and a fine Roccoco hall.
