Palais D'Hane-Steenhuyse
The most striking building on Veldstraat is the large 18th C. Palais D'Hane-Steenhuyse with a magnificent Roccoco facade and an equally intact Classical facade facing the garden, where concerts are held. The French king Louis XVIII lived in the house in 1815 during the "Hundred Days" of further Napoleonic rule. Other guests included the King of Westphalia, Talleyrand, the Tsar of Russia and the Prince of Orange. Today the house is the information center on restoration in the city.
Peace Treaty
In the houses opposite the Palais D'Hane-Steenhuyse (today C&A department store) the American negotiators stayed who signed the Ghent Peace Treaty with the British in 1814, ending the war between the USA and Great Britain.
