This square has played a major role over the centuries in the history of Ghent. It has been the site of meetings, festivals, tournaments, troop inspections and a shooting range. Since the 18th C. a flower and bird market is held every Sunday. Some of the old buildings have been preserved: the exchange built in 1738 as the main police station, the Hotel Faligan (1775) in French Roccoco and the Koninklijke Opera (Royal Opera); (1837-1840).
