Gettysburg National Military Park

The battlefield is now a National Park, traversed by more than 30 miles/48km of roads and tracks, with numerous monuments and memorial stones. Visitors can either find their own way to the main features on the battlefield or take part in a guided tour (2 hours). The course of the battle can be followed in detail on an electric map in the Visitor Center, which also displays a large collection of uniforms and weapons.

Must-see attractions nearby:
On the outskirts of the National Park is a farmhouse, which was occupied by President Eisenhower and his wife. In the quiet little town of Gettysburg are a number of museums and memorial sites commemorating the battle. The most notable features are General Lee's headquarters and Wills House, in which Lincoln spent the night.

The park comprises the Gettysburg Battlefield where one of the bloodiest and most controversial battles of the Civil War took place, on July 1-3, 1863 which totaled 51,000 casualties.

There are now 1,300 monuments, markers and statues, plus three observation decks and 31 miles of avenues within the park. Many states have erected memorials in the park, such as the statue of Robert E. Lee by Virginia.
