Gettysburg National Military Park

The battlefield is now a National Park, traversed by more than 30 miles/48km of roads and tracks, with numerous monuments and memorial stones. Visitors can either find their own way to the main features on the battlefield or take part in a guided tour (2 hours). The course of the battle can be followed in detail on an electric map in the Visitor Center, which also displays a large collection of uniforms and weapons.

Gettysburg National Military Park
On the outskirts of the National Park is a farmhouse, which was occupied by President Eisenhower and his wife. In the quiet little town of Gettysburg are a number of museums and memorial sites commemorating the battle. The most notable features are General Lee's headquarters and Wills House, in which Lincoln spent the night.
The park comprises the Gettysburg Battlefield where one of the bloodiest and most controversial battles of the Civil War took place, on July 1-3, 1863 which totaled 51,000 casualties.

There are now 1,300 monuments, markers and statues, plus three observation decks and 31 miles of avenues within the park. Many states have erected memorials in the park, such as the statue of Robert E. Lee by Virginia.

Eternal Light Peace Memorial
The Eternal Light Peace Memorial stands on the site of the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. President F.D. Roosevelt dedicated the memorial on the 75th anniversary of the battle. The monument is a perpetual flame with an inscription reading "Peace Eternal in a Nation United".

Gettysburg National Cemetery
Gettysburg National Cemetery was designed to provide proper burials for the 3,555 Union Civil War dead, 979 of them unknown. The 17 acres was dedicated in 1863 and the Soldiers National Monument is located at the center.

National Park Visitor Center
The Visitor Center in Gettysburg National Military Park is a good starting point for self- and fully-guided tours. The Gettysburg Museum of the Civil War and an electric map that illustrates the three-day battle are also located on the grounds.

Self Guided Auto Tour
The self- touring tape is used in a car to recreate the three-day battle of Gettysburg. The tape is available at the Civil War Wax Museum and is produced in co-operation with the Park Service.
