Schongau Attractions
30km/20mi south of Landsberg, in the Lech valley, lies the picturesque little town of Schongau (pop. 11,000), still partly surrounded by its old walls. On the long Marienplatz in the upper town is the Ballenhaus, an old warehouse of 1515. The parish church (17th-18th C.) has stucco decoration of the Wessobrunn school and ceiling paintings by Matthäus Günther.
Altenstadt, Germany

Three km/2mi northwest of Schongau is the village of Altenstadt, with the Romanesque church of St Michael (1210-30), which contains a fine Romanesque crucifix.
Hohenpeissenberg
East of Schongau, at Hohenpeissenberg, rises an isolated hill, the Hoher Peissenberg (998 m/3,274ft), on the summit of which are a church of 1619 and a radio transmitter, and magnificent view of the chain of the Alps.
Wessobrunn, Germany

To the north of Hohenpeissenberg is Wessobrunn, with a Benedictine monastery founded in 753 and dissolved in 1803. The upper floor has stucco decoration of the Wessobrunn school, the prevailing style in Upper Bavaria and Upper Swabia until 1720.
