The river Saar (French Sarre), known to the Romans as the Saravus, is formed by the junction of the Sarre Blanche and the Sarre Rouge, which both rise on Mt Donon in the Vosges (France), and flows into the Mosel at Konz. Between Sarreguemines (Saargemünd) and Saarbrücken it forms the frontier between Germany (Saarland) and France (Lorraine).
In the wide upper valley of the Saar are a number of industrial towns - Saarbrücken, Völklingen, Saarlouis and Dillingen.
At Merzig, where the river is bordered by rich orchards, the valley narrows.
