In the middle Saale valley, surrounded by wooded hills, is the former princely capital of Rudolstadt, with Schloss Heidecksburg looming over it. Wilhelm von Humboldt called this "one of the most beautiful spots in Germany".
Above the Saale River and the town of Rudolstadt rears Schloss Heidecksburg, a magnificent Baroque palace built by the Counts of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt from 1737 onwards. It now houses a museum and art gallery.
With its harmonious combination of architecture, paintings, sculpture and furniture it is one of the finest examples of European Rococo.
