Rheingau Region Attractions
The Rheingau region is the most elite in Germany and one of the most important worldwide. This geographical situation affords many south-facing slopes ideal for the cultivation of Riesling vines.
Most vines are grown in the mid-section on the lower slopes of the Taunus Hills. Also included in the Rheingau region are the districts at Hochheim (eastern boundary) and Assmannshausen and Lorchhausen (western boundary).
The Romans were the first to practice viticulture in this region and today many archeological sites can be visited. The Eberbach monks, with the monks of Schloss Johannisberg, developed a filtration system and one of the largest storing casks in the world at the time.

Eltville, Germany
Eltville is picturesquely situated amid Sekt-making establishments. Of the old castle of the Archbishops of Mainz there remains only the massive keep (1487; Gutenberg memorial). The 14th C. Gothic parish church of Saints Peter and Paul has a tabernacle of the late 14th C., a font of 1517 and a number of Renaissance tombs.
Schloss Johannisberg
Near Eltville is the little town of Oestrich-Winkel which passes under the prominently situated castle of Johannisberg (1757-59).
