The old town of Rendsburg, now a considerable industrial center, is attractively situated between the river Eider, which here opens out into the semblance of a lake, and the Kiel Canal (Nord-Ostsee-Kanal). It is the most important inland port on the canal.
To the southeast of Rendsburg a high-level bridge (1910-13) carries the railroad over the Kiel Canal at a height of 42m/138ft. Underneath it is a transporter bridge for pedestrians and cars.
Farther west are a road and a pedestrian tunnel under the canal.
To the north of the Eider in Rendsburg is the Casting Museum of the Ahlmann casting works, with fine examples of the delicate casting and wrought-iron work produced here.
To the east of the old town of Rendsburg and the railroad line, on Kieler Strasse, is the Elektromuseum (development of domestic electrical appliances since 1890).
Address: Elektro-Museum der Schleswag, Kielerstrasse 19, D-24768 Rendsburg, Germany
At the northwest corner of Paradeplatz in Rendsburg is the Hohes Arsenal Cultural Center (1989), with a Heimat- and Canal Museum and a Printing Museum.
Always closed on: New Year's Day (January 1), New Year's Eve (December 31), Christmas - Christian (December 25), Christmas Eve - Christian (December 24)
South of the old town of Rendsburg lies the Neuwerk district, built between 1690 and 1695, with the spacious Paradeplatz. Just off the square is the Christkirche (1695-1700), an interesting Baroque church with a special seat for the king of Denmark.
A little way north of the old town of Rendsburg is St Mary's Church (1287-93), with a richly furnished interior (fine Baroque altar of 1649, 14th C wall paintings).
