Rastatt lies at the mouth of the Murg valley, where the river emerges into the Upper Rhine plain. After its destruction by French troops in 1689 the town was rebuilt on a uniform plan, and it still bears a distinct Baroque stamp.
On Rastatt's Kaiserstrasset, a wide street running at right angles to the palace's axis of symmetry, stands the Baroque Town Hall (1750), with the Alexius Fountain in front of it. To the southeast are the Johannisbrunnen (St John's Fountain) and St Alexander's Church (1756-64), which has a sumptuous high altar.
Southeast of the town of Rastatt, near Kuppenheim, can be found the little palace of Favorite (1710-12), built as a summer residence for Margravine Sibylla Augusta, widow of Ludwig Wilhelm I of Baden. The interior gives an excellent impression of aristocratic life in the 18th C. (collection of faience and glass).
