Niederfinow Attractions
Location: 11km/7mi east of Eberswalde-Finow on B 167
At Niederfinow is a famous ship-lift. Efforts were made at an early stage to overcome the difference in level between the rivers Havel and Oder by the construction of locks. The Finow Canal (1746) had a chain of seventeen locks, while the Oder-Havel Canal (1906-14) had a series of four "steps", each of 9m/30ft. The present ship-lift was built alongside this canal between 1927 and 1934, overcoming the 36m/120ft difference in level in a single step. Because of the poor subsoil the lift could not be built directly on the slope, but is connected with the Oder-Havel Canal by a 157m/172yd long bridge.
