Ludwigslust Attractions

Ludwigslust, chief town of a district, lies on the Ludwigslust Canal, 35km/22mi south of Schwerin. With its Baroque and neo-classical buildings, this former princely capital, seat of the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, is one of the best-preserved town layouts of the 18th-19th century.

In Ludwigslust can be found a Baroque Schloss, the Town Church and the Schlosspark.

Along the top of the facade of the Schloss stand forty larger than life size statues and fourteen vases. Inside, the Golden Hall is beautifully decorated.
Town Church
Directly south of Ludwigslust's Schloss, forming a striking contrast to the low half-timbered buildings on either side of it, stands the Town Church (1765-70), preceded by a portico with six monumental columns. It contains a colossal painting of the "Adoration of the Shepherds" (1772-1803). Facing the altar is the ducal box, with luxuriant decoration (partly in papier-mâché). Two hundred m/220yd east of the church are two pylon-like bell-towers (1791-92).
