The industrial city of Krefeld, with its eastern district of Uerdingen extending to the left bank of the Rhine, is the main center of the German velvet and silk industry, which has been established here since the early 18th C. Other important industries are the manufacture of plush, steel and metal products and pharmaceuticals.
To the northeast of Krefeld's center, at Wilhelmshofallee 91-97, are Haus Lange and Haus Esters, two notable buildings (1928-30) by Mies van der Rohe, now used for exhibitions of modern art.
The old Heeder wallpaper factory in Krefeld, in Virchowstrasse to the south of the railroad station, has been converted into a cultural center (music, drama, cabaret).
Northeast of Krefeld's city center, reached by way of Uerdinger Strasse, is the zoo, with over 1,000 animals of 280 different species (Tropical Monkey House, Large Mammal House, Bird Hall). To the south is the Schönwasserpark, with the Botanic Garden (native and exotic plants).
