Hof, situated on the upper Saale, between the Fichtelgebirge and the Franconian Forest, is the most important industrial town in northern Bavaria (textiles, metalworking).
To the north of the Town Hall in Hof, on the street called Am Unteren Tor, can be found the Hospitalkirche (Gothic, with a Baroque coffered ceiling of 1688-89 and a carved altar of 1511). Nearby is the Vogtland Museum (regional history, crafts and house interiors; natural history).
The streets in Hof called Altstadt and Lorenzstrasse lead south to the Lorenzkirche (1292, with much later alteration), with the Hertnid Altar, a Late Gothic winged altar of 1480.
In Klosterstrasse in Hof, on the west bank of the Salle, stands the Town Hall. Facing it, to the east, is the parish church of St Michael (1380-86; restored in neo-Gothic style 1834).
