Hechingen, until 1850 the capital of the principality of Hohenzollern-Hechingen, lies at the foot of the Hohenzollern, a hill to the south of the town. The Zollerngraben is still an active center of seismic activity.
Commandingly situated on the Hohenzollern, to the south of Hechingen, is Burg Hohenzollern, the ancestral seat of the house of Hohenzollern. The present buildings, apart from the 15th C. St Michael's Chapel, were erected between 1850 and 1867 in a reproduction of earlier styles. Some rooms in the castle are open to the public and there is a valuable treasury.

To the south of the Schlossplatz in Hechingen stands the Stiftskirche of St Jakobus (1779-83), in the Zopfstil ("pigtail style") characteristic of the transition between Roccoco and neo-classicism. To the left of the high altar is the bronze grave-slab (by Peter Vischer) of Count Eitel Friedrich II of Zollern (d. 1512) and his wife.
