24km/15mi north of Halberstadt is Hamersleben, with a notable Romanesque Stiftskirche, a flat-roofed aisled basilica (begun 1111-12) with fine cubiform capitals. The choir screen (c. 1200) has figural decoration. Over the altar is one of the oldest altar canopies in Germany (a baldachin-like structure borne on columns; early 13th C.). There are remains of Late Gothic frescoes; also fine Baroque furnishings. Part of the Late Gothic cloister (end of 15th C.) has been preserved. The conventual buildings were renovated in the mid 18th C.
