The climatic resort of Freudenstadt in the northern Black Forest is one of the most frequented holiday places in the region and is also a popular winter sports resort.
17km/10.5mi south of Freudenstadt, in the Kinzig valley, lies the little town of Alpirsbach, which has a fine Romanesque church, originally belonging to a Benedictine house founded in 1095, with a Romanesque and Gothic cloister. Other features of interest are a museum on the history of the town and the Alpirsbacher Glasbläserei (glass-blowing works).
20km/12.5mi northeast of Freudenstadt, in the Nagold valley, is Altensteig, with an old castle looming over it. Three km/2mi away, on a narrow ridge of hills, is the little town of Berneck, with the Schloss (1846) of the Freiherren (Barons) von Gültlingen.
7km/4.5mi northwest of Freudenstadt is Baiersbronn, a popular summer and winter resort. In the outlying district of Klosterreichenbach is a Romanesque church which belonged to a Benedictine abbey.
On the south side of Freudenstadt, which here merges into the park-like natural fir forest (the "Palm Forest"), is the Kurviertel (spa quarter), with the Kurhaus (enlarged 1989) and the Kurgarten. At the foot of the Kienberg is the Kurmittelhaus (treatment facilities).
