Emmerich Attractions

Some 13km/8mi northeast of Kleve, across the Rhine, is the old free imperial and Hanseatic city of Emmerich (pop. 32,000), the last German town on the river.

The old town was rebuilt after World War II on its original plan. The Gothic Aldegundiskirche (St Aldegund's Church; 15th C.) has a notable interior. Downstream is the Minster of St Martin (11th-15th and 17th C.), which preserves the reliquary of St Willibrord (10th C.), the earliest surviving example of goldsmith's work from the Lower Rhineland. At Martinikirchgang 2 is the Museum of the Rhine, with models of old Rhine ships, technical apparatus, etc.
