The former free imperial city of Donauwörth lies on a ridge of hills above the confluence of the Wörnitz and the Danube. It has preserved its old town walls.
Neuburg an der Donau (pop. 26,000) is a trim little princely capital, perched on a high Jurassic crag above the Danube thirty km/19mi downstream from Donauwörth). In the walled upper town is the massive Schloss (1530-50; fine inner courtyards). In Karlsplatz are handsome buildings of the 16th-19th centuries.

On the banks of the Görnitz in Donauwörth stands the Riedertor, now housing a museum on the history of the town. A bridge leads on to the island of Ried, on which is the Hintermeierhaus (Heimatmuseum).
