The town of Kleve in the Lower Rhineland was once capital of the duchy of Kleve, known in English as Cleves (Henry VIII's fourth wife, Anne of Cleves, was a daughter of the Duke of Cleves). It is linked with the Rhine, 6km/4mi north, by the Spoy Canal (the continuation of an old arm of the Rhine), which was first constructed in the 11th century.
In the center of Kleve, on higher ground, stands the old castle of the Dukes of Kleve (15th-17th C.), the "Schwanburg" of the Lohengrin legend. The tower now houses a geological museum and an art gallery. The rest of the building is occupied by local government offices and is not open to the public.
Address: Schwanenburg, D-47533 Kleve, Germany
Tips: Parts of the castle are not open to the public.
