Cleves Attractions Kleve
The town of Kleve in the Lower Rhineland was once capital of the duchy of Kleve, known in English as Cleves (Henry VIII's fourth wife, Anne of Cleves, was a daughter of the Duke of Cleves). It is linked with the Rhine, 6km/4mi north, by the Spoy Canal (the continuation of an old arm of the Rhine), which was first constructed in the 11th century.
Church of the Assumption
In the Kleve Kleiner Markt is the Stiftskirche (1341-1426), with tombs of the Dukes of Kleve and a Marienaltar (Altar of the Virgin).
Kleve - Schloss
In the center of Kleve, on higher ground, stands the old castle of the Dukes of Kleve (15th-17th C.), the "Schwanburg" of the Lohengrin legend. The tower now houses a geological museum and an art gallery. The rest of the building is occupied by local government offices and is not open to the public.
Minorite Church
To the north of Kleve's town center, in Kavarinerstrasse, can be found the former Minorite Church (15th C.), with carved choir-stalls of 1474.
Municipal Museum
At Kavarinerstrasse 33 in Kleve is Haus Koekkoek, with the Municipal Museum (regional art since Roman times; changing exhibitions).
Zoo
On the hills to the west of Kleve lies the beautiful Tiergarten, originally laid out in 1653-57 (red deer, wild pigs, reindeer, wolves, bears, etc.).
