The spa of Bad Tölz lies on the river Isar, which here emerges into the Alpine foreland. On the right bank of the river is the picturesque old town, on the left bank the spa district, with water of high iodine content (springs drilled 1845).
Above the old town of Bad Tölz, to the northwest, rises the Kalvarienberg (Calvary), with a pilgrimage church (1726) and St Leonard's Chapel (1718), where on St Leonard's day (Nov. 6) the horses of the surrounding area are blessed.
Set in beautiful gardens in the Kurviertel are the spa facilities and numerous hotels of Bad Tölz. In Herderstrasse is the Herderbad (Herder Baths; 1949-50) and farther west, in the Kurpark, the Kurhaus. In Herderpark are the Trinkhalle (pump room) and Wandelhalle (indoor promenade).
Bad Tölz's main street, the wide Markstrasse (pedestrian zone), runs up from the bridge over the Isar and is lined by pretty gabled houses with painted facades. Behind the Town Hall can be found the Bürgergarten, from which there is a fine view of the Alps. Nearby is the parish church (originally Late Gothic). At the top end of the street are the Puppet Theater and the Bürgerhaus (Heimatmuseum).
