Bad Reichenhall lies in a sheltered situation in a wide basin in the Saalach valley, framed by hills, at the entrance to the Berchtesgadener Land, near the Austrian frontier. Within easy reach of the town are the Predigtstuhl (1,613m/5,292ft) and the Hochstaufen (1,771m/5,811ft).
The spa has strong brine springs which are used in the treatment of rheumatism and disorders of the respiratory passages.
On the northeast side of Bad Reichenhall is the former Augustinian monastery of St Zeno (founded 1136, dissolved 1803), with a Romanesque church (late 12th C.; altered in Late Gothic style 1512-20); beautiful west doorway, fine interior.
The activity of the spa centers on the Kurgarten in Bad Reichenhall, with the Old Kurhaus, the Evaporation Hall, the Pump Room, the treatment building and the brine springs. To the west, on Wittelsbacher Strasse, are the new Spa Center, the Kur- und Verkehrsverein (tourist information office), and the Theater.
Southwest of the Kurgarten, in the center of Bad Reichenhall (Getreidegasse 4), is the Heimatmuseum (Stone Age, Bronze Age, Celtic, Roman and later material; history of the town; salt-working).
Address: Bad Reichenhall Heimatmuseum, Getreidegasse 4, D-83435 Bad Reichenhall, Germany
In the south of Bad Reichenhall can be found the Old Salt-Works (Alte Saline; conducted tours; pumping station of 1839), with the springs (salt content up to 24 per cent) which are used both for spa treatment and for the extraction of salt.
Above the salt-works is Burg Gruttenstein (13th c.; not open to the public).
