Bad Lauchstadt Attractions

The little spa of Bad Lauchstädt lies on the river Laucha, to the west of Merseburg. A settlement on this site first appears in the records in the ninth century, and it is named as Lochstete in a document of 1341. Its heyday came after the discovery of its mineral springs around 1700. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries the Weimar Theater, under Goethe's direction, put on performances here in summer.

The Schloss still preserves a beautiful Early Renaissance oriel. Nearby are the Town Church (17th C.) and the 17th century Amtshaus.

The little Town Hall in the Markt, a plain Baroque building of 1678, has the town's coat of arms over the doorway.

In the town can also be found the Goethe Theater and a lovely Kurgarten.
Goethe Theater
The Goethe Theater (built by H. Gentz in 1802; restored 1966-68) in Bad Lauchstädt is the only neo-classical theater in Central Europe which has preserved wooden stage machinery of the Late Baroque period in working order. During the summer there are performances of operas, operettas and plays.

Kurgarten
In the Kurgarten in Bad Lauchstädt are the old mill-pond, the Herzogspavillon (Duke's Pavilion; 1735, probably by J. M. Hoppenhaupt), the Quellpavillon (Spring Pavilion) and Badepavillon (Bathing Pavilion), both 1776, the Kursaal (with murals by G. A. Pellicia to the design of K. F. Schinkel, 1823) and the Colonnades (a timber-built promenade of 1775-87 with architectural painting and shopkeepers' stalls; concerts in winter).
