Bad Gandersheim is a well known brine spa (recommended for rheumatism, gynecological disorders, children's diseases and ailments of the respiratory organs) in the Leinebergland, between the Harz and the Solling plateau. It is famed as the home of Roswitha of Gandersheim, Germany's first woman writer.
The town of Bad Gandersheim is dominated by the 11th C. Romanesque Stiftskirche, now a Cathedral, with a richly furnished interior. Immediately east of the church are the abbey buildings (c. 1600), with a beautiful Renaissance gable and the Imperial Hall (1753). In front of it is the Roswitha Fountain (1978).
Near the Stiftskirche in Bad Gandersheim is the Markt, surrounded by half-timbered houses, with the Town Hall (Rathaus), a charming Renaissance building which incorporates the Moritzkirche (St Maurice's Church). In the Town Hall is the Heimatmuseum.
